I know I wasn't the only one whose thoughts, on hearing this question and working out the answer, turned immediately to Mark Cox. But of course he never won Wimbledon. In fact he never got past the fourth round, which he reached three times – in 1968, 1977 and 1979.
Mark Cox was the UK's No. 1 male tennis player from 1974 (when he succeeded Roger Taylor) to 1977 (when he was succeeded by Buster Mottram). His best world ranking was No. 13, in August 1977.
